Differential Carrier Overhauling

Mechanical teardown and pinion depth calibration on a heavy commercial differential third member

Carrier Rebuilding, Backlash Calibration & Final Drive Metrology

The differential assembly stands as one of the most mechanically stressed structural zones in any rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or heavy commercial vehicle platform. Managing massive engine output loads while compensating for wheel speed differentials requires perfect component interfaces. Errors as minor as a fraction of a millimeter in tooth configuration will cause high-speed gear whine, bearing failure, or total axle lockups under load.

This program moves past elementary parts swapping to drill down into precision technical metrology. Candidates work directly on open, limited-slip (LSD), and locking differentials within our dedicated mechanical teardown bays. You will master exact carrier adjustments, gear patterns, and bearing configurations using professional indicators and depth tracking instruments.

Core Workshop Syllabus Modules

Isolating mechanical drive faults by tracing noise patterns (whining vs. clunking), checking for axle housing distortions, analyzing spent gear lubricants for metallic debris, and safely separating the third member from integrated and removable axle configurations.

Step-by-step disassembly of carrier housings, side gears, cross shafts, spider gears, and the pinion assembly. Students clean components to factory bare metal and perform precise crack testing along with friction-clutch stack inspections on limited-slip configurations.

Mastering the core math of final drive adjustments. Students learn to calculate and install specific shim values to position the drive pinion, measure ring gear backlash accurately with magnetic-base dial indicators, and adjust side bearing preload settings.

Applying gear marking compound to map teeth interactions. Candidates interpret the footprint (Drive side vs. Coast side) to verify the correct combination of root, face, toe, and heel centering before final component verification and dynamic testing.
